the maguire foundation provides “last dollar” scholarship support to students graduating from the listed philadelphia area high schools for four years of matriculation. maguire scholars who are selected by their respective institutions must maintain a 3.0 gpa or higher. the student also must be an active participant in their school through volunteer service or extracurricular activities.
during their four years at mount st. mary’s, maguire scholars will participate in regular academic counseling, attend an annual maguire scholars event, engage in service events and complete the four year maguire scholars program.
as a catholic university, mount st. mary’s graduates ethical leaders who are inspired by a passion for learning and lead lives of significance in service to god and others.
at mount st. mary’s, maguire scholars participate in a four-year plan based on the mount’s mission statement. students receive individualized academic support, professional development opportunities and increased interaction with faculty and staff.
the first steps a student takes on campus are often times filled with both excitement and trepidation. eager for the future and all that it holds, but with an unspoken fear of how to get there, these new feelings can be distracting for first year students, making the transition from high school to college difficult. the first year of the maguire scholar program at mount st. mary’s focuses on this transition and how to make it as trouble-free as possible while still placing a strong focus on academics.
during the fall semester, each mount maguire scholar has regular advising meetings, either on a monthly or bi-monthly basis depending on the individual needs of the students. advising meetings range from simple check-ins to mapping out majors to meeting with learning services to make study plans for challenging courses. students also attend group dinners with their advisor to discuss their classes and life at the mount.
once our maguire scholars reach the end of their first year, scholars are well adjusted and have established various study tools and strategies to help them succeed, they are equipped for their sophomore year and beyond. they will continue to meet regularly for advising meetings, dinners and service projects for the next three years.
god gives each of us a talent. how can we use that talent to serve him? in their second year at the mount, maguire scholars will reflect on their talents and the skills they have developed in their classes to lead and coordinate the mount suits you professional clothing drive. mount suits you was created in the fall of 2019 by maguire scholars to benefit their peers in providing professional clothing at no cost. maguire scholars collected clean and gently used professional pieces to help jump start mount students’ professional wardrobe.
throughout the year, maguire scholars reach out to alumni, parents, faculty and staff to collect donated pieces, as well as tag and organize the pieces for the students. scholars host a pop up shop for students to find an appropriate outfit for an interview, the career fair, or an upcoming internship. following the event, scholars oversee and welcome students into the mount suits you career closet where they can find last minute outfits for upcoming business-attire events.
by their third year, maguire scholars will have formally declared their majors, built strong relationships with the local community through their service project and started to envision their professional aspirations. in their junior year, maguire scholars will be paired with mentors in their desired field to learn how to be an ethical leader in their industry.
because the maguire scholar program is housed in the office of university advancement at mount st. mary's, our scholars have access to over 18,000 alumni who work in a wide range of fields including education, accounting, athletics and even neuroscience. no matter what field a maguire scholar chooses, we have the ability to pair them with an ethical leader who can assist them in meeting their ambitions.
senior year is always bittersweet for students. much like their first steps on campus, their last steps on campus as students will also be filled with excitement and apprehension. eager to start a new phase of their life, but with an unspoken fear of all the unknowns that lay ahead. during their last year of the maguire scholar program, the future mount graduates will tie their previous three years together to help prepare them for those unknowns, as well as welcome and mentor the maguire scholars who are just beginning their journey at the mount. by this point they will have laid a strong foundation, all they will need is the encouragement to go forward.
each student who graduates from mount st. mary’s university graduates on a path destined to a life of significance. as a mount st. mary’s university maguire scholar, these students will graduate with that and so much more.
